Oh Catalyst, Where Art Thou - Vol. II
How we got here.
Unearthing the depths of year-old circle meetings may seem like an odd endeavour. Why embark on such a quest? It's because the individuals who passionately participate in these circles are deeply invested in the Cardano space and the flourishing Catalyst community. Their involvement brings forth astute observations, shedding light on the inner workings of the Catalyst community and the toll inflicted upon the inter-subjective space.
Delving into this treasure trove of insights becomes an imperative task, for within it lies a wealth of knowledge. By examining the discussions and reflections of these dedicated individuals, we gain a nuanced understanding of the challenges faced by the Catalyst community. It offers us a unique vantage point, allowing us to comprehend how the interplay of perspectives impacts the ecosystem's vitality.
In our quest to grasp the intricacies of the Catalyst community and foster its growth, mining the riches concealed within these circle meetings becomes an act of discovery and enlightenment. The valuable insights garnered from this exploration will undoubtedly contribute to the collective journey towards a more vibrant and inclusive Cardano ecosystem.
CCv2 ATH - 17th November 2021
0:23h (since Fund 6) no onboarding, (no proper carework), “[…]used to be different in early funds"
0:27h Excluding proposals from submission? Deflection onto Raymond because he needs to leave in 20m
0:33h A mathematician who read Cardano papers, first time on a circle meeting, speaking out about how they see Cardano (Catalyst) community: “Looks like Cardano is cutting the opinion of a lot of crypto people, it’s just a big divide. [...] Why is there so much noise around what Cardano is or not?”
This is very likely what a fractured (and parasite infected) inter subjective space looks like from outside.
No matter how perfect the governance tools, if we don’t repair our inter subjective space(s) before rolling out CIP1694, obscure centralised control will eventually kick in. The argument to centralise power will be founded on fear of the networks’ or individuals’ needs not being met, due to compromising or non cooperative parties or agents. ADAWhale has 2 lovelaces along concentration of power:
The reply in the meeting was structured around how the energy is perceived as coming from outside Cardano. Recent months have shown over again that the contrary is more true.
“[...] People are threatened, Cardano is a powerful vision for the future and I think it threatens a lot of places [...] People out of envy and insecurity attack when they feel threatened”
People "attack" when their needs are not met.
In our relentless pursuit of progress, we must transcend the confines of the antiquated dialectic of good versus bad, punishment versus reward—a paradigm that shackles our potential to reimagine governance in unprecedented ways.
Let us recognize that Cardano, while a remarkable and commendable approach, exists within the broader melangè of ledger technologies. Envy and insecurity, which sow seeds of discord within us, are but manifestations of unmet needs yearning to be fulfilled.
When we perceive the world through the lens of aggression and conflict, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy—an inexorable spiral that perpetuates the very hostility we seek to transcend. This is not surprising, for we have been conditioned for millennia by a domination culture—a culture that wields the whip of punishment and the carrot of reward, reducing us to the status of obedient subjects.
To break free from this cycle, we must embark upon a profound journey of relearning—a journey that transcends the limitations of our linguistic constructs. Nonviolent Communication becomes our compass, guiding us towards a language of life—a language that articulates our needs with clarity, empathy, and understanding. Through this transformative practice, we unlock the highest realms of human collaboration, soaring beyond the mundane constraints that tether us to the ground.
Let us embrace this evolution, this revolution of consciousness, as we strive to communicate our needs and desires harmoniously. In doing so, we unlock the boundless potential that lies within each of us, propelling us towards a new era of collective cooperation—a renaissance of human collaboration that knows no bounds.
CCv3 Onboarding Meeting
Here goes an example of an important need not fully heard:
0:39h Complicated statement about worry that need for financial security won’t be met by engaging with the Circle. Reply referenced the backlog of things to discuss in the CCv3 meeting.
0:49m “Good” governance as source of meaning for Cardano?
CCv2 Meeting #4 - 23rd December 2021
https://quality-assurance-dao.gitbook.io/catalyst-circle-oversight-v2/ccv2-meetings/meeting-4-december-23rd-2021
0:06h defamation accusations; announcement of actions to be taken; isn't circle supposed to just sense and recommend course of actions?
Obviously an emotional response, why is there no specific space in the daily check-in for this? Maybe the person wouldn’t have to feel they have to take action.
0:18h “Discussion around moderation in general”
A need for non violent communication expressed.
CCv2 Meeting #5 - 6th January 2022
https://quality-assurance-dao.gitbook.io/catalyst-circle-oversight-v2/ccv2-meetings/meeting-5-january-6th-2022
1:10h “How do we bring in voices that have a different style of communication?”
The style (or culture) doesn’t matter if communication in organisational matters is nonviolent.
If on boarding includes NVC workshops and Mentors, careworkers welcoming and helping newcomers with getting it “right” after workshop, all voices would have an equal chance of being heard.
1:11h “Its about going around different places and listening to people, and this is how distributed governance will happen. It won’t happen by lumping everyone together and treated as one thing.”
Very true and leading by example should be a priority for circle members.
1:12h "Defamation and blatant lies that have not been moderated"
To put responsibility of transmuting defamation, gas lighting and other violent behaviour only on moderators is questionable and an impossible position to be in.
1:13h “[…] this is on boarding immediately tens of thousands of new *users* to catalyst, and is a problem because some individuals are sabotaging this.”
Given what we now know about inter subjective parasites and NVC, this seems not an ideal approach of addressing ones own unmet need, in order to relate and collaborate in a healthy and prosperous way. What needs are unmet? The need to have autonomy, self sovereignty and freedom of expression for future generations to come? Maybe? Would this align with the need of the other party that supposedly is blocking this need?
What if we would come together and talk about what we actually need and how to create a win-win situation, a true positive sum game?
1:14h "[...] it's about what culture we want to build here"
1:18h "[...] we [IOG] do have some guidelines that have been created."
1:20h "[...] perhaps we need more people,[...]" ; "[...] be supportive, to build up each other and build the platform together. These are all part of what we want to see in the community, and hold your self and others in the community in high standards."
In our quest to cultivate an open, collaborative, nonviolent, and deeply engaging culture, we must recognize that the path stretches far beyond the mere establishment of a code of conduct, community guidelines, and diligent moderators. Indeed, these are essential pillars, but they merely scratch the surface of the profound transformation we seek.
To weave the intricate web of such a culture, we must delve into the very essence of its meaning. What ideals and principles intertwine to shape its foundation? What values emerge from this shared sense of purpose, serving as guiding beacons along our collective journey? And, perhaps most significantly, what profound emotions stir within us when we witness this culture materialise before our eyes—a vivid reflection of our deepest needs being met?
At the heart of this endeavour lies a sacred exploration—an exploration of meaning, of purpose, and of the profound interconnectedness that unites us all. It is through this exploration that we unearth the core principles that underpin our desired culture—a tapestry woven with threads of empathy, compassion, respect, and mutual understanding. These principles, when nurtured and embraced, become the catalysts for the transformation we seek.
In the ethereal realm of our envisioned culture, we are guided not only by rules and regulations but by the pulsating energy of shared values. Values that ignite our souls and inspire us to forge a path of collaboration, growth, and collective well-being. It is through the embodiment of these values that we breathe life into our culture, infusing it with a vibrant spirit that resonates within the hearts and minds of all who partake.
So, as we embark upon this transformative journey, let us hold steadfast to the vision of the culture we aspire to create. Let us delve into the depths of our beings, tapping into the rich reservoirs of emotions that arise when we witness the manifestation of our ideals. It is through this profound connection to our needs being met that we lay the foundation for a culture that transcends the ordinary—a culture that celebrates our shared humanity, fosters collaboration, and illuminates the path to a more harmonious and fulfilling collective existence.
The questions above, should be deliberated on before we on board tens of thousand more agents into an open system like Catalyst.
Bits of additional impressions:
1:22h "[...] moderators do delete post that are inflammatory or negative [...]"
Why not flag and use as learning and growing experience for the moment and future community members? How does deleting a post solve anything? The energy still exists and potentially festers into more malignant forms.
1:24h "[...] conflicts draw in crowds."
Maybe because many people see something in them reflected back at them?
1:26h "[...] are you prepared to ban [...]"
Why propagate domination behaviour in the new economy?
Rule abiding in Open Systems
1:27 “[...] they [ann.: agents in catalyst] need to abide by the rules [...]”
Within the realm of open systems, it is inherent that not all agents will conform to predefined rules. It is futile to expect complete adherence, for it is the very nature of openness that invites diversity and individual expression. Yet, in our current landscape, we find ourselves entangled in systemic challenges—challenges that arise from the punitive approach we have adopted.
The path to restoration lies not in perpetuating this cycle of punishment and retribution but in embracing a paradigm of restorative justice. By tending to the inter subjective spaces that connect us, we unlock the true potential of collaboration—a potential that transcends the limitations imposed by punitive measures.
Consider, for a moment, the scalability of a punitive justice approach. Does it not lead us down a treacherous path, one in which we find ourselves entrusting a policing or moderation squad with the power to enforce compliance? Such a trajectory inevitably gives rise to oppression, censorship, and the erosion of individual autonomy.
Alternatively, we can forge a different path—a path guided by the principles of nonviolent communication and profound human collaboration. By cultivating a space that nurtures empathy, understanding, and shared purpose, we create an environment where restoration and transformation can flourish. It is within this space that conflicts find resolution, grievances find solace, and true healing unfolds. A true solar punk movement.
So, let us ponder the choice before us. Shall we perpetuate a system mired in punishment and control, or shall we dare to embrace the transformative potential of nonviolent communication and collaboration? The decision lies in our hands, and with it, the power to shape a future that celebrates our shared humanity—a future where open systems become catalysts for harmony, growth, and collective well-being.
Community KPIs
1:28h "[...] it (community guidelines) has to be integrated into the experience"
Indeed, the inclusion of mentors in onboarding new members through NVC workshops presents a transformative opportunity. These mentors, as guides and facilitators, would not only impart valuable knowledge but also be duly compensated for their contributions. In this way, a change of perspective, a transmutation of energy, can occur within each individual, paving the path towards a harmonious and empathetic community.
To ensure the effectiveness of moderation, a paradigm shift is required. Moderators should not be confined to mere rule enforcers but rather embrace the role of careworkers. By embodying this dual role, moderators can not only moderate discussions but also actively participate and provide training in NVC, fostering an environment of understanding and conflict resolution.
1:30h "[...]Catalyst Governance Parameters [...] ; "What parameters do we start with? [...]"
We must acknowledge that traditional moderation, if not approached with care and mindfulness, can inadvertently exacerbate polarization within the community and lead to the burnout of dedicated moderators. To avoid this pitfall, a holistic approach is necessary, one that integrates the principles of NVC into the moderation process. This integration can be supported by the establishment of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that measure the extent to which the needs of community members are being met.
Furthermore, we can explore aligning individual parameters with the specific collective needs that require fulfillment. By prioritizing these needs and starting with the most meaningful ones, we can effectively leverage the potential of this remarkable technology to heal the Noosphere. Through thoughtful and intentional design, we can harness the capabilities of Cardano and its community to create an ecosystem that fosters empathy, collaboration, and the collective well-being of its members.
Let us embrace this opportunity to craft a governance model that values the interconnectedness of individual needs and collective harmony, forging a future where technology serves as a catalyst for the healing and transformation of our inter subjective spaces.
1:44h "[...] There's still concern in the community about legitimacy of circle [...] you have to strengthen legitimacy to move forward [...]"
Riddle me this: Does the CC has more legitimacy after the vote has been done via DripDrops?
Community Member on TH events - 20th January 2022
Doing NVC on behalf of whole community, splendid!
An example that NVC creates a space for solution oriented communication.
0:4h " [ . . . ] arguments often dismissed , MPO (Multi Pool Operators) often throw temper tantrums and silence people [... ] "
That sounds like cancel culture, how do you feel about that?
[...] like a lot of things we can dress up in the language of choice , we can hide some truths . It's possible to mislead people and make it harder to make these choices happen."
Sound familiar ? Gaslight maybe ?
The Multi-Pool-Operator discussion is another "can of worms" that could fracture the Cardano communities inter subjective spaces if conflict isn't transformed with Nonviolent Communication.
0:7h " When powerful people still feel like underdogs , people get hurt " →
NVC helps to understand own needs and that feelings are a result of needs being met (positive/joyous feelings ) or not (negative/hurtful feelings). This understanding makes hurting people in whatever position difficult to impossible.
CCv3 Meeting #0 - 17th February 2022
https://quality-assurance-dao.gitbook.io/catalyst-circle-oversight-v3/ccv3-meetings/onboarding-session-17th-feb-2022
0:15h concerns about amount of circle rep remuneration raised, since CC is transitioning from volunteer to professional basis it seems difficult to talk about this.
What’s the need not being met behind this concern? Sustenance? Why is isn't it possible to declare how much work is done on pro-bono basis and how much of it is livelihood? Having a clear and honest understanding of everyone’s needs would allow for a much more fair and efficient distribution of resources and funds.
CCv3 Meeting #2 - 17th March 2022
https://quality-assurance-dao.gitbook.io/catalyst-circle-oversight-v3/ccv3-meetings/meeting-2-17th-march-2022
1:44 h " [...] Funding was for 10h a week ( awn : for Cc reps ) , looks like many of you are jumping above and beyond that into half or full time thing . "
Why not offer reps to declare how much of time they can contribute as pro-bono, that would free up funds for someone in need of livelihood. This can only work if we communicate our needs clearly and honestly to our self and others.
Community Governance Oversight (GCO) Meeting #2 - 24th March 2022
0:59h "the person we're having the issue with [...] is also banned from all the Discord channels and we have removed some of the outreach possibilities for him"
Directly voicing concerns about violent behaviour within CatalystCirlce, gets deflected by an individual in a group that is called Community Governance Oversight.
What is Gaslighting actually?
Excerpts from VeryWellMind
[1] Breines J. Call me crazy: The subtle power of gaslighting. Berkeley Science Review. April 2012.

[4] Johnson VE, Nadal KL, Sissoko DRG, King R. "It's not in your head": gaslighting, 'splaining, victim blaming, and other harmful reactions to microaggressions.
How did Gas Lighting happen?
Person joins group and in the first meeting is asking for adequate (professional) compensation for professional level work, from the community
The group disagrees, person submits proposal autonomously from his personal Ideascale account, after doing a community survey, as was recommended by peers
After submitting the proposal the person was removed from the group within a matter of weeks, even though this was a precedent case
While the community guidelines have been violated in multiple places. No Remediation took place.
To accomplish this the group created a plan of how to remove person from the group.
This serves as a poignant example of discrediting someone in a violent manner, devoid of empathy and understanding of their unmet needs. It is not mentioned to incite blame, seek revenge, or prosecute, but rather to highlight the necessity for a fundamental change in how we engage and connect with one another.
The individual in question now finds themselves confused and potentially facing unmet needs, perhaps even struggling to provide for their family. They believed they were contributing value, only to discover their unwelcome status. Such experiences can burden the mind and contribute to mental health challenges.
Why do we inflict this upon each other? Whether it be individuals from different corners of the world, with diverse values, perspectives, and cultural conditioning. Instead, let us cherish the opportunity to harness the immense potential of human collaboration. With a multitude of perspectives communicating in the language of life, no challenge becomes insurmountable.
What are the signals to watch in order to mitigate such events?
A very common and subjective signal is anger, frustration or depression. if those feelings arise while witnessing a conversation or meeting, it is an indicator for violent communication and could result in violent behaviour such as gas lighting, shaming, rejecting, etc.
What to do as a community? As an Individual?
In the face of malicious behavior, it is crucial to delve beneath the surface and seek to understand the unmet needs that drive such actions. By cultivating empathy, we can explore our own emotions and identify the underlying needs that resonate within us—whether it be a need for safety, connection, or something else entirely. With this clarity, we can engage in open and honest communication, articulating our needs while extending a genuine invitation for the other person to do the same. This vulnerable and compassionate approach disarms hostility, leaving no room for further conflict. As a community, it is essential that we embark on this collective journey, standing in solidarity with those affected and working together to ensure the fulfilment of everyone's needs.
Cancel Culture?
Excerpts from VeryWellMind
How does cancel culture emerge?
Some months after, the person was confronted with a petition against them in regards to their vPA activity. In the end the person received their vPA reward but was excluded from participating in the vPA (quality assurance) program ever again.
Going into detail isn't necessary now, if anyone wants to do so please reach out in the comments.
[4] Vogels E, Anderson M, Porteus M, et al. Americans and 'cancel culture': Where some see calls for accountability, others see censorship, punishment. Pew Research Center.
What are the signals to watch to mitigate such a culture emerging?
Strong emotional reactions with strong urges to react instantly or conjure a plan
Close-Mindedness
Deflection or downplay of the other feeling offended by something a person said
When we feel strong emotions and the urge to react with either teaching, exposing, shaming, judging,…
How to practice true inclusivity?
Through the power of empathic connection and fostering a truly inclusive environment, we can significantly reduce the fertile ground for cancel culture to thrive, while simultaneously creating spaces that attract visionary thinkers and innovative problem-solvers.
As a community of individuals within an open system, if we aspire to enjoy autonomy, freedom of creative expression, and unlock the boundless potential of human collaboration, we must evolve our mode of communication.
To reclaim the inter subjective spaces from destructive processes, such as parasitic influences, and to genuinely support one another, we would do good in embracing the practice of Nonviolent Communication (NVC). NVC prioritizes the fulfillment of individual needs in a manner that satisfies all parties involved. However, this can only be achieved through clear and honest communication of needs. Our prevailing culture, rooted in domination, has conditioned us to think in terms of absolutes (good or bad, reward or punishment), and these patterns permeate our minds and relationships, influencing our attempts to manipulate others' behavior based on our perceived notions of what is beneficial or detrimental to us.
